It's actually pretty neat to just take a piece of material and turn it into something. Not everything is made out of a mold. Many products require machined parts.
My husband has been doing this for about 20 years now. It's not a skill many people are aware of. Often times, when he tells people he's a 'machinist', they think he's saying that he's a 'mechanic'.
"Oh, so you work on cars." ....is a response he often gets. It's quite funny.
